Kauai 2010 Election Selection

SUBHEAD: Island Breath suggestions on voting on Kauai in 2010 in midterm elections. Mahalo Andy Parx. Image above: Neil Abercrombie. We hope our next governor. By Juan Wilson on 22 October 2010 - We think Andy Park has been on target throughout the race of Kauai mayor and council this year. His strategy of focusing on Kipukai Kualii as the only county council vote you should cast has some merit. However, if you want Kipukai on the council and are convinced that another candidate has less voter appeal than he does, there seems little risk of dilution of your vote by voting for that candidate. At the federal level Andy is supporting Jim Brewer for US Senate. We, however, are recommending Lloyd Jeffrey Mallan over Jim Brewer, even though Jim has been a long time supporter of the Green Party, and outspoken opponent of the "Iraqistan" War, a proponent of universal health care and the 10 Key Values of the Green Party. Part of the reason is that Jim is getting on in age. He has no publicly available email address or website. Lloyd Jeffrey Mallan, a Libertarian, opposes our current wars and supports Hawaiian sovereignty. He also lives on Kauai. At the state level we are reluctantly supporting Brian Schatz for Lieutenant Governor. We would much rather be voting for Gary Hooser. We are recommending Brian, but are also pushing for Gary to be appointed Chairman of the Board of the Department of Land & Natural Resources. As for Lingle supported constitutional amendment to appoint (rather than elect) the Board of Education members we agree with Andy Parx to vote NO. On the Kauai Kauai Charter Amendments we also agree with Andy Parx.

I will just add that these are the Publisher's selections. We agree about KipuKai, but there is some disagreement about one or more of the other candidates.

Aloha Brad,

Correction. We have had a policy of using a majority of our editorial staff to determine voting suggestions; not the sole opinion of the publisher... me.

I will admit to making some errors in documenting our recommendations, and have made corrections in response.

I believe each member of our staff, including yourself, have had to make some modification to their personal opinion to reach our joint recommendations.

I hope everybody gets out to vote on November 2nd.

i support 4 year terms for council members. the existing two year terms means every other year is an election year. Also, with 4 years terms, Council members become subject to recall! Oui!
